Unicorn Hole Do yourself a favor and listen to this with headphones and the lights off, or maybe in your car while driving late at night. Perfect Again is a twinkly, spacey, emotional ride. If it took since 2014 to get this finished up, then I'm glad BGO never let it slip into the ether. The hard times that inspired it can be felt in the haunting melodies and vocals. In 2014, I worked on a small release to be titled "Gone Again". There were several variations of the track list, but two songs remained consistent: Dying Again and Perfect Again. Often these were the only songs.
Up to that point, I had been writing about 2 - 3 BgO albums a year on average, but in 2014 all I really managed to eek out for the project was a handful of songs. (For a bit of perhaps lesser known history, I put the project on hiatus in 2015 after the tour with Femoral and kept it that way until the ten year anniversary stream)

I was in an extraordinarily dark place during an extraordinarily painful year and it's still relatively difficult for me to think about just how bad I felt when I wrote/recorded the eponymous track. Hearing it still carries a lot of ugly weight, but overcoming it feels like a lifted burden and I finally feel the glimmer of catharsis that I had always hoped for. I do believe that sometimes the emotional energy we expend under trying circumstances can be transformed into good things when we have the capacity, so I hope that is what I've accomplished. In recognizing that fact though, we can of course get trapped into thinking that we have to mine value and extract content from every aspect of our lives, that suffering without productivity is a waste, so I need to emphasize that it's absolutely not. If you grieve or struggle without "something to show for it" that's fine. Sometimes hardship breeds creativity, sometimes we just need to feel horrible and cry it out.
I'm still learning this.

I've paired the title track with two songs that make me happy.
Big Dumb Cat Head is my favorite song from the Critters "sessions" and Miko's Beach is a song about my partner's cat swimming in a dream.
